We have a saying in our house ~ "MOMMY ALWAYS WINS".
It has applied to babies who didn't want to sleep and a million other things.
Today it applies to furniture.
When we bought our dining table and chairs, it was after a long few hours of searching EVERY furniture store in Aberdeen (and considering the town is not-so-big, there are a bunch of them).
We knew what we wanted: light wood. expandable.
at least eight chairs.
Somehow, the table we'd seen everywhere, all the time, until we
actually wanted to buy one, didn't exist.
Of course you always find what you're looking for in the last place you look and in this case we found something we wanted that was better than what we thought we wanted.
We were introduced to what is called a "gathering" table. We'd like to think we were among the first to get one, but they are pretty popular now and are unique in that they are counter height and come with chairs that are taller, resembling bar stools.
Being on the tall side, we loved the chairs' height. I pictured my someday-pregnant-again
self so much better able to sit and stand, since I wouldn't have to go
SO FAR down and SO FAR back up.
The chairs is where I'd like to focus for a moment.
I'd like to think that my being duped was because we'd had a long day that day. It was because the sales lady was so nice and must have had a trance-inducing quality to her tone. Maybe I could blame Kurt for helping her be so convincing.
From the start, I KNEW (in that pit-of-my-stomach kind of way) that padded chairs, no matter what they were covered with, would not be a good idea for our family.
But! they were soft! they were cream colored! and ~ they were MICROFIBER! The toughest, most stain-resistant miracle material on the planet. GUARANTEED not to hold a stain and look brand-new perfect for years and years and years to come!
May I humbly introduce our chairs as of about a week ago:

It is only for posterity (and that we're turning our blog into a book at the end of the year) that I share this picture. Most of the marks, I hope you can tell, are water marks from attempting to clean these poor things. We learned AFTER our money had been paid that you can't clean these with a wet rag. Even after researching different techniques (and trying them!) they didn't look "good as new" ever, ever again.
On a few occasions I even sprayed the chairs with carpet spot cleaner.
They still looked crummy.
So, a lesson has been learned about listening to my gut instinct. And, after having the "we need to do something about those chairs" discussion many times, I was finally in the right place (JoAnn's) at the right time (Mother's Day weekend) and bought the solution to our problem:
DARK. BROWN. VINYL.
To make a great purchase even better, I used one of JoAnn's' MAGIC 50% off coupons and my total purchase (3.5 yards) was only $17.60. Yay! Go ME!
We don't need to discuss how Mother's Day was - ahem - quite some time ago and how it's only now that the project has (finally!) been completed.
We don't need to discuss any of that.
It's done.
All eight, previously gunky-looking chairs now look like this:

This beauty is HAPPY to be cleaned up with a wet rag.
HAPPY! and BEAUTIFUL!
FOREVER!
